Explore Your Dental Insurance Options

When it comes to taking care of your teeth, purchasing the proper dental insurance is essential. Dental insurance really comes in handy for those who cannot deal with the increasing costs of seeing a dentist. The decision to select dental insurance that is right for individuals or families (depending on the situation) becomes an important task to conclude.

Whether you are buying dental insurance through your place of business or looking for independent options, it is vital to analyze a variety of plans to ensure you are getting the best deal. Many different factors listed below may come into play when making a final selection.

Affordability

When selecting dental insurance, it is important to compare yearly maximum coverage on a regular basis. The amount in benefits that a plan will pay in one full year is one of the most important aspects to choosing the best dental insurance plan. Yearly maximums also renew on an automatic basis every year. It is also important to know that anything not used within a year will not roll over into the next. Many dental insurance companies only allow an average yearly max of 00.

Dentists

In the case of independent dental insurance, most plans will only cover your dental services if they are administered from a dentist that is contracted or participating in their network. It is important to find out if you are required to receive your dental work from a participating dentist. Some plans may allow individuals to stay with their current dentists, but checking the policy for these allowances is essential.

Major Coverage

Dental insurance companies separate their dental procedures into three different categories. When comparing plans, you should ask about their policies regarding preventative, major, and restorative work. Varying dental companies will view different dental procedures in many different ways. For example, one dentist may consider root canals and crowns a major procedure while another will not. This is important to know before choosing a dental insurance plan.

Waiting Periods

The length of time that an insurance company will make you wait before you can enjoy coverage is called the waiting period. For example, some plans hold policies that make you wait 12 months or longer before you are covered for a crown.

Cosmetic Dentistry

If you are interested in seeing your dentist for any cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening or bleaching, you should know dental insurance companies rarely cover cosmetic dentistry. For the few that do, prepare for high rates.

All about Sedation Dentistry in Santa Barbara

For many people, going to the dentist is a fear that has followed them around since childhood. Often, these people have a difficult enough time going in for a simple cleaning, let alone an oral procedure. Fortunately, the option of sedation dentistry exists. Sedation dentistry in Santa Barbara can make dental work possible again for those who otherwise cannot handle it.

WHAT IS SEDATION DENTISTRY?

Put simply, in sedation dentistry, the patient is sedated before a procedure is performed. This differs from normal dentistry, where the patient is awake throughout the entire process. For those who get anxious and have panic attacks in situations such as this, sedation is often the only option.

HOW DOES THE SEDATION WORK?

Depending upon the procedure and the severity of the person’s anxiety, there are a variety of sedation techniques that can be used. Oral sedatives such as alprazolam or diazepam can be used, as can intravenous sedation or nitrous oxide sedation. Since different people respond to each type of sedation differently, it’s important that there be a variety of techniques available.

DOES THE PATIENT GO UNCONSCIOUS?

In some cases yes; other cases, no. There are three tiers of sedation – anxiolysis (during which the patient is given a mild tranquilizer), conscious sedation (the patient is usually given a stronger sedative) and deep sedation (the patient is often sedated to the point of being unconscious). The depth and type of sedation will depend upon the procedure being performed, as well as the patient’s tolerance for anxiety and sedation.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SEDATION DENTISTRY?

The benefits of sedation dentistry are tenfold. Getting dental work done on a regular basis is extremely important to one’s health. Not only does poor dental hygiene affect one’s mouth, but studies have shown that it can actually have negative effects on the heart. Thus, one must consistently see a dentist in order to keep their dental health strong. Unfortunately, however, some people find visiting the dentist to be extremely nerve-wracking and can barely go through with it – if at all. This is where the benefits of sedation dentistry come in.

Sedation dentistry allows the patient to deal with the dental procedure, as the sedation calms their worries and – in some cases – can render them unconscious so they do not need to deal with the procedure at all. In this way, sedation dentistry is quick and effective for the patient, and can make the dental experience far less painful.

Sedation Dentistry: Comfort for the Asking

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Sedation Dentistry: Comfort for the Asking

It’s an old cliché that visiting the dentist is a nerve-wracking thing, a justified cause of apprehension. Over the ages, this has been true, if you remember that dentistry was done by your local barber, who used giant pincers to remove a tooth past saving, or used a string tied to a door handle and slammed the door.

And if we note that anesthetics were not developed until the 19th century, we can understand how this cliché came into being. Even our grandparents had some justification for being anxious about dental visits, in those years when dentists had relatively crude instruments such as slow-speed drills and large needles.

Well, we don’t mean to wake up your dental anxiety here. We are going to try and persuade you that there’s no cause for it any more. Not that you can press a button and presto! It’s gone from your psyche. But you can simply ask for a sedative.

A modern cosmetic dentist has been thoroughly trained in making patients comfortable. If you choose a cosmetic dentist who has graduated from the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), you will be gently and courteously treated. Your dental work will be done using the latest and best dental technology, based on lasers and computers. There will be virtually no discomfort, and if you do feel any, mention it to your cosmetic dentist, and he or she will immediately do something to mitigate it.

A Welcoming Environment to Set the Stage

From the moment you enter an LVI-trained dentist’s office, you will be welcomed. The team will be friendly and well-trained, and will be getting on well with each other. The top priority in the office will be your comfort and satisfaction. There will be no long, boring wait before you’re ushered to your dental chair, because the dentist will be well-organized and fully on top of his job. The rooms will be attractively decorated with colors, plants, artwork, and comfortable chairs. Magazines, if you want to read any while waiting for a family member, will be up-to-date.

You will be offered many amenities (varying with each particular dentist), such as:

• A refreshment bar – teas, coffee, snacks, bottled water

• A paraffin wax hand treatment – very soothing and pampering

• Pillows and blankets

• Headphones for music or movies

• Pre-numbing of the gums before local anesthetic is given

• Extra anesthetic if you feel any slight discomfort after the dentist begins work

• A special device to hold the mouth open at the right height, saving your jaw muscles from that fatigue

Oral Sedation

Before you have any dental work done, you will be given an oral medication. It will give you a relaxed and peaceful feeling, banishing your anxiety or apprehension. When combined with well-administered local anesthetic, it will make your whole dental visit calm – and you will need someone to drive you home afterwards.

Sometimes there is confusion between sedation dentistry and sleep dentistry. They are not at all the same thing. Sleep dentistry uses general anesthesia, and does what it sounds like – puts you entirely to sleep. It is is what you would have in a hospital, for surgery. It is rarely offered by dentists, as it isn’t necessary. Also, it requires a specially-trained nurse-anestheticist or medical anesthesiologist to calibrate your dosage, administer it, monitor your vital signs while the dentist works, and determine when you are awake and alert enough to go home.

Sedation dentistry gives oral medication to relax you. When you are relaxed, your cosmetic dentist can work more quickly and probably do several procedures in one visit which might have taken several visits otherwise. That could save you some time and money.

If you are curious about sedation dentistry, contact Dr. Gary Alhadef for more information and to schedule your initial consultation.

How to be a Smarter Dental Consumer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

How to be a Smarter Dental Consumer

The kind of service obtained by an individual is only as good as the kind of dentist visited. It is important for the consumer to know that not all dentists work the same way. They come in different personalities, levels or experience, and styles.

In order to get the preferred service, the patient needs to invest in some work to find the dentist that works best. Cosmetic dentistry in Houston Texas is no different in that consumers have to be savvy. Patients need to take an interactive and educated stance.

Take note that there are several factors which influence the diagnosis of the oral condition. The first factor to consider is the time invested by the dentist on the patient. A comprehensive dental exam is necessary so that all the problems in the teeth and mouth can be seen. Trust a dentist that takes the time to thoroughly inspect the mouth before starting with the dental work.

Training is also an important consideration for patients. Not all dentists have the same level of training. Dental school teaches the basic dental techniques. It goes without saying that the dentist should have passed dental school and is legally licensed to practice. However, training should still continue even after dental school. The best dentists are those who pursue additional skills through further training and education.

The best kinds of dentists are those who are able to confidently and quickly finish the tasks at hand. Confidence is not learned in school; rather, it is gained from experience. The more experience the dentist has, the better it is for the patients. People who have been on the job longer can diagnose conditions more quickly since it is possible that they have seen it before. In addition to this, patients are better off trusting dentists who have already done the dental procedures before. Not only are they less likely to make a mistake but they also know how to deal with their patients better.

Finally, smart dental consumers go to dentists who exhibit a high degree of integrity. An individual should be sure that the recommended course of action is the best for the condition. The procedure should be explained and a breakdown of the expenses should be provided to the patient.

A Look at Dental Insurance

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

A Look at Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is often an afterthought when obtaining health insurance for a number of reasons. Some people may simply dislike the dentist and use the lack of dental insurance as a reason to not visit the dentist; others may feel that dental insurance is not worth the added cost to their monthly health insurance premium. Still others may simply feel that their teeth are in good shape and there is little need to spend the extra money to cover a part of their body that does not currently have any problems. Nevertheless, dental insurance is important because of several benefits.

When people think of the cost of dental work or procedures, they often think of costly bills. Even simple procedures like getting your wisdom teeth removed can average in the hundreds of dollars per tooth! However, one obvious benefit to dental insurance is the coverage of simple but costly dental procedures such as getting a tooth removed. In the end, the slight increase in a monthly premium may be worth it to avoid a high dental bill. Moreover, dental insurance also helps financially if a dental emergency develops. Perhaps you are in need of a root canal or dental implants – both extremely costly procedures that you often do not anticipate. Dental insurance will most likely cover a portion, if not all of these expensive procedures.

Also, while many feel that brushing and flossing daily is all the dental care they need this is simply not true – even for young, healthy adults. Dental disease is common and can affect your body in a number of ways. For instance, some dental diseases left untreated can lead to more serious medical issues such as kidney infections or even diabetes. Most people do now know of the connection between dental diseases and other illnesses. Thus, having dental insurance that covers routine visits to the dentist, which can help uncover dental diseases early, is extremely important. Dental insurance is designed to encourage preventative care, because spotting dental diseases or dental problems early reduces the overall cost of treatment.

Dental insurance may seem like just another gimmick to get a few more dollars out of you, but it is essential for your health. Your regular health insurance plan, whether it is through your employer as a group plan or an individual plan, should offer you the option of buying dental insurance coverage, and you should consider this piece of the plan thoroughly when purchasing health insurance.

Shop Around For Affordable Individual Dental Insurance

Everyone needs to see a dentist from time to time. If for no other reason than just for a checkup ever six months. Not everyone has dental coverage included with their medical insurance plan though. If this is the case for you it may be time to start looking for individual dental insurance. These plans are available from a variety of providers, but every plan is different. It is important to know the details of each plan you are considering.

It is important to understand what your dental and financial needs are before starting to look at possible dental plans. It is important to find one that fits your needs and also your budget. Planes have different coverage amounts and different co-payment amounts as well. There are also deductibles to consider. These are just a few of the aspects that must be considered when finding the right policy for you.

Most dental plans have a specific amount of time that must pass after the policy is initiated before certain procedures are covered. The more expensive the procedure the longer the waiting period in most cases. Usually there is no waiting period or a very short one for cleanings and exams. Fillings have a slightly longer waiting period, and major work like root canals have the longest waiting period.

If you have dental work that needs to be done soon it is important to look at the waiting periods on each plan that you are considering. On many individual dental insurance plans the shorter the waiting period the more expensive the premiums are. This is not true in every case, but it is true for most. If you are just looking to have an exam you should not have any difficulty with finding a plan that will allow for one right away.

It is also important to keep your monthly budget in mind when you are looking for a dental plan. There will be a monthly amount that must be paid in order to continue the coverage. If this amount is not paid on time every month it may interfere with your dental coverage. This is why it is important to know how much you can afford to spend each month and not exceed that amount. Dental insurance or insurance of any kind is a long term financial commitment.

It is possible to look up insurance quotes on the Internet. There are many great companies that supply a lot of information this way. This is a good place to start your search. You can get a good idea of what companies have plans that work for you. It may also be possible to get a few quotes for coverage online. This is a convenient method that many people use today.

It is also possible to find companies online and simply call the phone number that is provided so that you can work with a representative on creating the right coverage plan to fit your needs. The Internet is a good place to find contact information for insurance companies. Feel free to call and speak to several in order to find the right plan for your needs.

Everyone needs to see a dentist and if you are looking for individual dental insurance coverage you have many options that are available to you. Many of these options can be found right on the internet. Take the time to be sure of what your needs are and what your budget is before buying a policy. It is important to get the coverage that is right for your needs.

Having major dental work done. Told by one dentist to replace 20 teeth with crowns, a bridge and a catilever?

Question by Thinkingagain: Having major dental work done. Told by one dentist to replace 20 teeth with crowns, a bridge and a catilever?
Having major dental work done. To best use a limited money supply, I was told by one dentist to replace 20 teeth with crowns, a bridge and a cantilever bridge. This dentist explained that implants were costly, and that the rest of my mouth needed the work the most. All in all, this dentist explained that the crowns would be the best use of the money, would last the longest, resist later decay, etc.

Went to another dentist. This dentist has explained to me to basically bond a bunch of teeth first, for a lot less money, and then get 16K of implants. It seems, though, that this dentist is also saying to crown teeth later, and the same ones he is saying he will bond? Is this a ruse or what? Why would you bond teeth, and then do a crown, I would imagine the composite resin that was bonded onto the tooth would have to be drilled off anyways for the crown, so therefore why not just crown?

Basically I need to know what treatment plan is the best. I have 3 missing teeth, 1 of which could be a bridge or implant, 1 that could be an implant or a cantilever bridge, and one that “has too much bone loss for an implant,” and “no supporting tooth structure” on the lower jaw for chewing.

I have, lol, about 30k to spend, if need be. I want the longest lasting and most cost affective approach.

Sorry for the breadth, just wanted to be specific to get a good answer:)

Place 10 different dentist in the room and you’ll get 11 different treatment plans. To be honest, both options seem feasible to me. The big question I have is why are you getting this work done? If it is because of decay everywhere, then I would think bonding at first may be the way to go. No offense, but if hygiene is terrible on a patient, spending $ 20K on crowns and bridges may not be the best idea right off the bat as it will most likely fail in a few years. If it is because there are tons of teeth built up with 20 year old leaking amalgams, then maybe crowns would be a better option to begin with. We have to take out old fillings anyways for the crowns and place new ones underneath. The second dentist may not charge you to “build-up” the teeth if he has already done all that bonding which is primarily the same thing. Implants I think are better in the long run as no other teeth become involved in that restoration. If a bridge fails, the whole bridge has to be replaced (3 or more teeth). Downside to implants are the time table. Expect 9-12 months from start to finish on replacing teeth with implants. Some people just don’t want to wait that long. Another thing to consider is if the teeth on either side of the missing teeth need crowns anyway, the bridge prep is already done. No additional adjustments to the teeth need to be completed.

I’m glad you are choosing to restore your mouth. This is definitely a complex case for any dentist. Once again, either plan sounds acceptable from what you wrote. Don’t hesitate to contact a third dentist as well.

They accepted my insurance and were able to see me for a consultation later that day, which was hard to explain but managed. The office was surprisingly close to where i was staying. A very nice lady greeted me with her southern hospitality. after a short wait i was seen. The doctor there was very confident in her abilities and scheduled me for the day after. She took a mold of my mouth and i was off for another closed mouthed awkward interaction with my friends. A awoke early the next morning and snuck out passed my sleeping friends and into the car. Another sweet greeting and a short wait later I was seen by the doctor. She sat me down and her her young apprentice put a negative mold of my mouth in my mouth to see if it fit right. Then some goop was placed in the mold and back into my mouth. The young apprentice heated it up with this blue glowing light/blow dryer. They both then took turns reshaping it throughout the hardening process. A few minor adjustments and I got to open my mouth when I spoke. When i returned to my friends, they already knew I was in a better mood. A crafty memphis dentist implant search and some stealth maneuvering optimized my vacationing.

I also would like input from those having 1st hand experience, good and bad–as I am considering the procedure because of the recent loss of 3 teeth, side by side; (upper, “medium front”).

Also, I have had dental work in Mexico with excellent results, and am willing to do it again; any “war stories” re: Mexico??

I’m retired and cannot afford US prices.

I’ve had one dental implant done about two years ago and am very happy with it. The tooth is made of a different material than the usual crown and can take over 700 pounds of pressure. First, they made sure I had enough bone to support the post. If that is not the case, they can built up the bone and I don’t have experience with that. Then, they screwed a metal post into my jawbone and placed a temp. crown over the post. This all was painfree due to the anesthetic. General is also available. Afterwards, you have to wait about 6 months for bone to form around the post, then you get your permanent superstrong tooth. I feel like I could bite a rock with it. You will have to care for your teeth as you would with your natural teeth, by flossing etc.. I am scheduled to have three molars implanted in the next couple of months and am confident it will be a positive experience. Yes, it is costly, but I had a bridge placed for 3000 dollars and they made a mistake. Lost the bridge and the teeth underneath as a result of it. As far as Mexico, I have no idea. I’ve known of a few people going to Hungary where German dentists have opened clinics and they have had great experiences there. Best wishes.
