Question by Bik3i: SFX makeup: making gums for Teeth?
Hi! I am an SFX makeup student and I have to apply some makeup next week in class. I’m pretty new to all of this and I need to make a set of “dentures” that will sit on the outside of the mouth (over the lip). I have made the actual teeth, however I still need to make the gum. I can make them on the day but I would rather make them before hand to save time as we have a limited amount of time to apply the makeup.
My problem is I am unable to craft them to fit the models face as she isn’t available before the day, so I need something that will remain pliable/bendable enough after it has dried so they will fit pretty well on the day.
I have measurements of the length/height of her lips etc but nothing else.
Soo if that all makes sense I pretty much need a way to make a bendy/rubbery gum for the teeth. I have pinkysil silicone which ive never used before I don’t know if that would help. I also have brushable latex, plaster and klean clay so I could perhaps make a rough mould of a mouth and make a gum out of that? I’m not too sure…

Any suggestions?

Buy a gob of dental wax and fold it til its soft. Have her bite down on the wax, then have her fold it up to where her gums stop and tell her to make it comfortable.

You can either make a silicone casting of this mold or simply use it as-is as a reference.

If this is not possible, I suggest the clay.

Also, you could take a “binky” approach. Like a baby’s pacifier…. craft the dentures and allow a small flap for her to bite on to hold them in place.

Are dentures cheaper than dental implants? Yes and no. They may be cheaper in the long run, but dentures do not last forever. You have to get them adjusted periodically. This means every year or so you need a new set. They are not cheap and run in the thousands. As insurance covers some dental work such as dental implants, dental implants make better sense in the long run as you do not have to continue to get them replaced. You have to take care of them as you would any other tooth, but you do not have to get them removed and replaced.

Removing your teeth can be embarrassing for some people, especially if they get dentures at an early age. Having bad teeth or missing teeth can be a confidence killer. In some cases, people have such bad teeth that they get an infection that spreads all over their body because of that which is in their teeth. In those cases, the teeth have to be removed.
